Academic Year 2013-2014

President's Greeting

Welcome to Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences!

Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (Seinäjoki UAS) has operated for 20 years. The academic year 2013-2014 is the eighteenth academic year of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences as a permanent HEI (Higher Education Institution). Our vision is to be a successful, international and entrepreneur-spirited institution of higher education. We aim to provide high quality education.

From the beginning of the academic year 2013-2014 Seinäjoki UAS operates on three campuses. The gradual transition from eight educational facilities to three campuses has made Seinäjoki UAS even more communal. The opportunities for multidisciplinary common studies widen study perspective. Restaurants, cafe, student lounge and other common areas on campuses offer good opportunities for networking, new acquaintances, friendships and common interests.

We aim to operate as an independent and successful institution of higher education also in future. Our goal is to have wide national and international co-operation networks with working life and other universities.

All fields of study that are central to working life, commerce and industry are represented in our university of applied sciences:

  • Technology
  • Business
  • Culture
  • Social Work and Health Care
  • Natural Resources
  • Tourism, Catering and Domestic Services
These fields of study can be found under four faculties from August 2013 on: School of Food and Agriculture, School of Business and Culture, School of Health Care and Social Work and School of Technology.

Seinäjoki UAS School of Business and Culture and School of Technology are at the main campus of Seinäjoki. School of Health Care and Social Work operates at two different addresses: Keskuskatu 32 near Seinäjoki main campus and Koskenalantie. School of Food and Agriculture is also located in two places, at Seinäjoki main campus and in the municipality of Ilmajoki. This school combines teaching and competence of Hospitality Management, Agriculture, Food Processing and Biotechnology.

Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences provides education to approximately 4700 students. In addition to 21 bachelor degree programmes for young people, of which two instructed in English, we offer opportunities to adults to complete degree programmes and professional specialisation studies. Opporturnities to adults are offered also at the Provincial University of South Ostrobothnia. There are seven master-level degree programmes in Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. In one of the programmes the medium of instruction is English.

Every year about 1000 new students are enrolled in our degree programmes and almost 800 students graduate yearly. We aim to develop learning and teaching methods so that education is supported by the current know-how of working life and industry. FramiPro - a shared programme of multiple degree programmes started a year ago - is a good example of this. It has opened new multidisciplinary study opportunities for many of our students.

We aim at providing our students with knowledge and skills that are needed in an operational environment that is becoming more and more international. Therefore we focus on international student and staff mobility as well as on planning joint and double programmes. There is a wide range of opportunities for studying and conducting practical training outside Finland. Seinäjoki UAS has international partner universities in Europe and also in all other continents in the world. Seinäjoki UAS offers an extensive and diverse range of language courses. An international auditing group has evaluated the international activities of Seinäjoki UAS during the spring semester 2011 and their feedback is taken into account in development work.

The students of Seinäjoki UAS are provided services according to the model of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) for the third year running. FSHS offers diverse range of health care services to all degree students at Seinäjoki UAS. Seinäjoki UAS is one of the first two universities of applied sciences to undertake this model which has served traditional research universities for more than 50 years. The high-quality health services are available for all degree students who pay the FSHS fee. Other students can continue using municipal health care services. The FHSH pilot experiment continues until the end of July 2014.
