Academic Year 2012-2013
President's Greeting
Welcome to Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences!
Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (Seinäjoki UAS) has now operated for almost 20 years. The academic year 2012-2013 is the seventeenth academic year of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences as a permanent HEI (Higher Education Institution). Our vision is to be a successful, international and entrepreneur-spirited institution of higher education. We aim at a high quality of education and dynamic way of action.
The universities and universities of applied sciences in Finland modify their educational services according to the national requirements. Due to the national development requirements, Seinäjoki UAS will change its educational structure during year 2013. We will also continue centralizing our educational facilities in the city of Seinäjoki. The regional needs for organizational and adult education will be taken into account by actively participating in the development of the Regional Higher Education Network of South Ostrobothnia.
All fields of study that are central to working life, commerce and industry are represented in our university of applied sciences:
- Culture
- Social sciences, Business and Administration
- Technology, Communication and Transport
- Natural Resources and the Environment
- Social services, Health and Sports
- Tourism, Catering and Domestic Services
Our university of applied sciences consists of five faculties conducting both teaching and research. Teaching is arranged in Seinäjoki and four other locations in the surrounding area.
Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences provides education to 4700 students. In addition to 21 bachelor degree programmes for young people, of which two instructed in English, we offer opportunities to adults to complete degree programmes and professional specialisation studies. Every year about 1000 new students are enrolled in our degree programmes and almost 800 students graduate yearly. We aim to develop learning and teaching methods so that education is supported by the current know-how of working life and industry.
Master's degrees provided by universities of applied sciences are also establishing their position in the Finnish educational system. There are seven master-level degree programmes in Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. In one of the programmes the medium of instruction is English.
We aim at providing our students with knowledge and skills that are needed in an operational environment that is becoming more and more international. Therefore we focus on international student and staff exchanges as well as planning joint and double programmes. Opportunities for studying and conducting practical training abroad are wide-ranging. Seinäjoki UAS has international partner universities in Europe and also in all other continents in the world. An international auditing group has evaluated the international activities of Seinäjoki UAS during the spring semester 2011 and their feedback will be taken into account in development work.
From autumn 2011 on, the students of Seinäjoki UAS are provided services according to the model of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS). Seinäjoki UAS is one of the first two universities of applied sciences to undertake this model which has served traditional research universities for more than 50 years. The high-quality health services are available for all degree students who pay the FSHS fee.
