Learning Outcomes

Students will
- be familiar with disorders, injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system in the working aged population
- know how to examine and assess joint mobility, muscle strength and nerve function by using a set of instruments and tests for functional capacity, and learn to make conclusions on the basis of the examination
- know how to plan, implement and evaluate conservative, pre-operative and post-operative physiotherapy for clients/patients with musculoskeletal problems
- be familiar with assistive aids for daily activities and mobility
- know how to select appropriate aids for their clients and instruct on the use of the equipment
- understand the physiology of pain
- understand the effective mechanisms in cold and heat treatments and in electrotherapy
- know how to apply physical treatments in a safe, appropriate way as part of the physiotherapy process
- be able to instruct special-needs exercise for musculoskeletal disorders
- assume responsibity for their own actions and conform to the policies commonly agreed
- apply evidence-based information in the physiotherapy process with working-age clients
- be introduced to the principles applied in qualitative and quantitative research
- know how to use quantitiative research and analyse it by means of statistics programmes
- be able to assess the mobility and functional capacity of cardiac patients
- know how to apply a variety of methods in the planning and implementation of cardiac physiotherapy
- understand the meaning of health promotion in prevention of cardiovascular diseases
- know how to apply examination methods when assessing respiratory function and learn to make conclusions based on the results
- be able to implement appropriate physiotherapy based on the assessment of respiratory function
- understand how illness changes functional capacity and know how to plan and apply physiotherapy methods
- understand the mind-body interaction and observe the client's body relationship and bodily responses
- know how to help clients/patients to become aware of the body-mind interaction and its effect on functional capacity and wellbeing
- be introduced to occupational physiotherapy as part of occupational health services
- become familiar with legislation on occational health care
- be prepared to participate in workplace surveys together with occupational health staff, including an assessment of work ergonomy and physical stress and reports on the assessments
- know how to plan and implement improvements for work ergonomy and physical stress problems
- be familiar with the extensive concept of work capacity and with the variety of activities designed to promote work capacity
