Learning Outcomes

COMPETENCE IN CUSTOMERSHIP IN NURSING, DECISION-MAKING COMPETENCE AND ETHICAL COMPETENCE

Students will, under supervision, be competent in identifying the needs of patients and their families and in planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting treatments. Students will learn to describe the system of mental health services and chains of services. Students will learn to encounter patients in a variety of life situations. Students will learn to recognise the principle of client- and resource- centred work in the nursing relationship with patients and families and in multi-professional teamwork. Students will follow ethical principles in mental health nursing. Students will be able to give oral reports under supervision. Students will know how to use technology and equipment in nursing.

CLINICAL COMPETENCE

Students will be able to identify common mental health disorders and to assess changes in patients' condition. Students will, under supervision, be able to carry out nursing interventions in mental health nursing. Students will recognize patients' individual needs for rehabilitation and learn to support their rehabilitation. Students will learn professional interaction with mental health patients and their next-of-kin. Under supervision, students will be competent in implement ing medication safely and in monitoring its effectiveness.

COMPETENCE IN HEALTH PROMOTION

Students will understand the importance of promoting patients' and their families' health and resources. Students will know the main factors that affect mental health and illness. Students will know the physical and mental aspects of occupational safety and the principles of occupational wellbeing in mental health nursing.

COUNSELLING AND MENTORING COMPETENCE

Under supervision, students will be able to counsel and teach patients on issues related to their health and illness and to apply evidence-based knowledge. Students will be able to plan, implement and evaluate counselling situations under supervision.

LEARNING COMPETENCE

Students will learn to critically reflect on and evaluate their level of professional expertise with regard to their strenghts and weaknesses and to the professional competence requirements. Students will evaluate their learning skills, needs and the learning environment.

Contents

The practical training takes place in psychiatric wards or in other institutional or outpatient care in the area of mental health work.
