Basic issues concerning data communication; data communication network, local network and network services (Internet). Libraries and data communications, data processing systems in libraries; data processing systems used in libraries in Finland; review of IT standards and process involved in developing and purchasing data processing systems for libraries.

Contents

The course discusses the concept of information system, information systems in libraries, library information systems and their functions, technical environments, Finnish library systems, and an overview of standards, as well as the development and acquisition process associated with library systems.
