Learning Outcomes

CLINICAL COMPETENCE, COMPETENCE IN HEALTH PROMOTION

Students will learn gerontological research methods and theories on aging and analyse their significance from the perspectives of elderly people, their close community, nurses/public-health nurses, care organizations and society. Students will learn to descibe factors that influence the health, functional capacity and well-being of elderly people, and explore what knowledge exists that pertains to the experience of physical, mental and social aging. Students will be introduced to common somatic illnesses, mental health problems and sensory disorders in elderly people. They will also become familiar with syndromes that the elderly commonly suffer from and learn to apply their knowledge in the holistic care of the elderly.

Contents

The course comprises the following: Gerontology as a science; Theories on aging; Individual experience of aging; Physical, mental and social aging; The health, functional capacity and well-being of elderly people in light of research; Special features in elderly people's illnesses and the main principles of medical care; Various syndromes and their causes; Neurological disorders and syndromes in elderly people; Mental health problems in elderly people; Diseases that cause sensory disorders
