Learning Outcomes

LEARNING COMPETENCE, INNOVATION COMPETENCE

Students will learn to evaluate and develop their professional competence and learning methods in perioperative nursing. Students will learn to search and process knowledge critically, to solve problems and to develop perioperative working methods creatively.

COMPETENCE IN HEALTH PROMOTION

Students will observe the principles of promoting and supporting the health and resources of patients of all ages in multi-professional nursing. Students will know the main factors that influence the health and illness of perioperative patients. Students will, under supervision, identify their patients' individual rehabilitation needs and learn to support patients in rehabilitation.

CLINICAL COMPETENCE, COUNSELLING AND MENTORING COMPETENCE

Students will learn to identify threats to their patients' physical, mental, spiritual and social safety and to help by nursing interventions, if needed. Under supervision, students will be competent in preparing patients for treatment and in monitoring, evaluating and maintaining the vital functions of the patients before, during and after treatment. Students will follow asepsis in perioperative nursing. Under supervision, students will be able to implement common treatments, procedures and examinations in perioperative nursing. Under supervision, they will implement intravenous fluid, drug and nutritional care and blood transfusions safely. Students will be able to manage the drug calculations needed in drug care. Students will learn to alleviate patients' pain and suffering and to evaluate the effectiveness of pain control throughout the perioperative nursing process. Students will recognize the main instruments and equipment used for anesthesia and surgery and also learn to use them safely. Students will learn to teach and counsel patients of all ages and their families on issues concerning perioperative nursing.

ETHICAL COMPETENCE, COMPETENCE IN CUSTOMERSHIP IN HEALTH CARE AND DECISION-MAKING COMPETENCE

Students will assume responsibility for their own actions and for the consequences of their actions in the perioperative environment. Students will learn to interact with people of all ages and with their family members in different life situations; students will observe the principle of equality.
Students will be competent in identifying needs of patients and their families and in planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting nursing care. Students will work in client-centred and target-oriented interaction and care relationships in the perioperative environment. Students will utilize information and nursing technology and equipment and observe data security and confidentiality principles.

WORKING COMMUNITY COMPETENCE

Students will understand the physical and mental aspects of occupational safety, important to the maintenance and promotion of nurses' wellbeing in the working community. Students will learn interaction as members of the working community, including appreciation of their colleagues. Students will use information and communication technology in multiprofessional perioperative nursing. Students will learn decision-making in ad hoc situations.

INTERNATIONALIZATION COMPETENCE

Students will be able to speak in a foreign language, if needed, and to work in a multicultural perioperative environment.

Nursing in different environments 1,2,3/4/5. Passed drug calculation tests.

Students apply theoretical studies in practice in various learning environments.

This practical training period is assessed pass/retake. The tasks are assessed pass/fail or numerically.
