Learning Outcomes

Students will understand the basic concepts associated with the strength of materials. They will be competent in determining axial, bending, shearing and torsional stresses for simple bar structures. Students will be able to determinate the amount of strain and displacement in various cases. Students will be able to solve simple buckling problems and utilise the theory of plasticity for simple bar structures. Students will be able to calculate principal stresses.
