Learning Outcomes

Students will become familiar with geriatric examination, treatment and rehabilitation pathway. Students will study the reasons, background, progress, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of various diseases and they will be able to utilize the knowledge later in their work. They learn to apply geriatric knowledge when planning the comprehensive care of elderly people and when selecting suitable care settings and counselling the patients' carers and voluntary care-givers. Students will be competent in working in close contact with sick elderly people and their families, for example in home care and dementia units. They will also become experts in many areas and levels of dementia work.

Contents

-Geriatric examination, treatment and rehabilitation pathway
- Principles in medical care of elderly patients: illness and symptoms
- Falls and problems with balance
- Pain and pain control
- Acute confusion
- Cardiovascular, pulmonary and gastrointestinal diseases
- Incontinence, osteoporosis, musculoskeletal diseases
- Neurological disorders
- Mental health problems: depression and paranoia
- Memory disorders and dementing illnesses and their medical care
- CERAD testing
- Gerontechnology in the care and rehabilitation of people suffering from dementia

Studies in geriatrics are divided into two equally extensive parts: general geriatrics and dementing illnesses and their treatment
