Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to observe and reflect on the ethicality of their own actions, and learn to promote the health, well-being and functional capacity of elderly people in service housing units/elderly homes. Students will practice application of reminiscence, music therapy and other creative methods in individual and group activities. Upon completion of the practical training, the students will know how to apply basic gerontological knowledge to the assessment and promotion of elderly people's functional capacity and wellbeing in service housing units/elderly homes.
They will practise ways to promote the wellbeing of the clients in groups by a variety of methods (e.g. reminiscence, physical exercise, music, arts and crafts, literature, painting and the TTAP method). Students will also reflect on their personal development and challenges for development.

Contents

- Service housing centres/elderly homes as a part of society's service system for the elderly
- Individual ageing as a subjective experience, life circle, needs for services and how to meet them in service housing units
- Experiences of elderly people concerning their life circle in an elderly home
- Participation in the service processes in service housing units/elderly homes
- Supervision of activities for elderly people

Assessment Methods

- passed practical training, thematic learning journal and other assignments and reports given on them (assignment with the student's "own" elderly person, supervision of reminiscence)
