Learning Outcomes

Students will be competent in approaching elderly people with dementia from a therapeutic point of view, and know how to plan and carry out quality dementia care. They will know how to conduct memory testing. They will know how to observe common features in dementing illnesses. Students will be familiar with common medications and learn to implement drug care. They will know how to analyse and support communication of elderly people with dementia. Students will be able to prevent behaviourial problems and become competent in applying theoretical knowledge to reach therapeutic interaction. They will know how to apply various psychosocial methods, creative therapies and group activities to support and rehabilitate their clients. Students will gain knowledge of the entire service delivery system in dementia work and they will be competent in working at various levels of the system. They will also be competent in analysing and developing the quality of dementia care.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Care of elderly people suffering from dementia 2 cr

Contents

- Learning to use the CERAD Test
- Familiarisation with the service pathway for elderly people with dementia
- Familiarisation with the work of a rehabilitation counselor for dementia patients
- Participation in the service processes for patients in dementia units and small dementia care homes
This practical training period mainly takes place in dementia units/nursing homes, but it is also possible to carry out part of the training in dementia counselling or day activities.

Assessment Criteria

Level 1 (grade 1-2)
With support from supervisors, students have reached a passable level of competence in the learning outcomes defined for this practical training.

Level 2 (grade 3-4)
Students have reached a good level of competence in the learning outcomes defined for this practical training. They are able to integrate theoretical knowledge of dementia care and pharmacotherapy to care for individual clients. Students know how to analyse the implementation of nursing principles in their work. They are able to independently use various psychosocial and creative methods in the care of clients who have dementia.

Level 3 (grade 5)
Students demonstrate extensive command over the expected learning outcomes. They are able to analyse their learning and competence from multiple perspectives. They know how to analyse the implementation, quality and development needs of dementia work in the placement. Students are motivated to extensively develop the work further.
