- understands power of institutions and discourses in constructing design values in different cultures, as consumer’s, enterprises’ and designer’s and them as interpreters

Contents

- what was considered as good design in different times: institutional values and discourses in design, concept of taste as differentiation, recognising tastes in different consumer cultures
- history of design societies: in graphic, fashion and interiors and furniture design, design associations in Finland and internationally
- history of recognition the forms: intertextual references in material products, design classics and cultural tribes
- constructing identities in material and visual culture: history and contemporary of corporate identity, how different consumer tribes express then self visually
- design as communication: principles of visual reading, visual language, form language, gaze, interpretation and interpreter, recognition of consumer segmentations visually

Assessment Criteria

K5 = Ability to analyse discursive references in material and visual culture and form language and comprehensively and representatively in exercises. Competent in using main concepts and critical interpretations and is able to show comprehension in exercises. Attending actively in studies.
H3 = Understanding design historical references in material and visual form languages and discourses. Competent in using main concepts and arguing in discussions and exercises. Attending actively in studies.
T1 = Student is not able to show analytical and critical competence, but recognizes main lines of design historical references in visual form language. Attending passively in studies and shows not accurate comprehension in studies and exercises.
