Learning Outcomes

After the course the student knows what the Finnish children's librarian does today and has done earlier. S/he is able to tell about the future of children's and youth library work. The student is able to choose suitable activities in children's and youth department in the public library.

- The activities of children's and youth department: story hours, booktalk, information skills instruction, media education
- Children and youth as customers
- The co-operation between library and schools
- The history of children's libraries

Lectures, groupwork, practises in children's and youth department's activities (story hours, booktalk and organizing small events).

Satisfactory (1-2)
The student is able to tell the most important tasks of the work of the childrens' and youth department in a public library. S/he is able to choose and propose the right materials for the children and youth of different ages. The student is able to identify the important organizations of co-operation and s/he is able to tell what kind of co-operation is done.

Good (3-4)
The student is able to analyse the tasks of childrens' and youth department in a public library. S/he is able to choose and propose in many ways the right materials for the children and youth of different ages. The student is able to identify the important organizations of co-operation and s/he is able to tell what kind of co-operation is done. S/he is able to tell some new possibilities of co-operation.

Excellent (5)
The student is able to tell a diversified analyse of the tasks and the future of childrens' and youth department in a public library and also as apart of society. S/he is able to choose and propose in many ways the right materials for the children and youth of different ages. The student is able to identify the important organizations of co-operation and s/he is able to tell what kind of co-operation is done. S/he is able to tell some new possibilities of co-operation.

Assessment Methods

Assignments 60 %, active participation in lectures and group work 20 %, exercises 20 %.
