Learning Outcomes

CLINICAL COMPETENCE

Students will be introduced to fields of clinical laboratory medicine and to the laboratory process. They will understand the meaning of laboratory tests when examining bodily functions and disorders. Students will learn common examinations in clinical physiology, microbiology, clinical chemistry and haematology. They will learn to interpret the results of the examinations. They will also learn to prepare patients for common physiological and microbiological examinations and measurements. Students will learn to take blood, urine and stool samples. They will learn the basics of point-of-care testing.

Student's Workload

Will be announced at the beginning of the course.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

No prerequisites

Contents

The course comprises the following:
Fields of clinical laboratory medicine. The laboratory process. Optimal health range and reference range. Patient counselling and sample taking. Clinical-physiological examinations of the cardiovascular system. Samples in clinical microbiology. Common examinations in clinical chemistry and haematology. Basics of point-of-care testing.

Recommended or Required Reading
