- Narrative conventions and traditions
- Characters, time, place, and conflicts
- Diagnosis of the strengths and weaknesses of a script
- Breaking a script down into production costs
- Familiarisation with the tools a screenwriter uses
- Innovation of new formats
- Practising synopses and production plans
