Specialisations

The degree programme does not include actual specialisation studies but as your studies progress it is possible for you to focus on increasing your competence in event management, media management or visual management. The choice between the orientations takes place during the first study year. You will gain the professional competence pertaining to the orientation you have selected through practical training, career counselling and professional studies.

The degree programme leads to a higher education degree which is a first cycle Bachelor-level degree in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). According to the eight-level classification of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and National Qualifications Framework (NQF), the degree represents level 6.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Seinäjoki UAS's common practices are observed in the assessment and recognition of prior learning (RPL). The final thesis and Maturity Test are not included in the RPL process. Other studies can either be replaced by courses of equivalent content or other acquired expertise. Studies completed in other institutions may also be included in the optional and elective studies. To receive credit for the practical training for prior work experience a report must be submitted to the degree programme according to the practices observed. Previously acquired expertise expires in 10 years. The teacher who processes the applications may request additional information or demonstration of prior learning, if necessary. The following evidence is used to assess prior learning:

- Certificates from courses or other training of similar content
- Interviews with the student in question and written reports
- Job references and additional information acquired from employers
- Skills test if necessary
- Comparison of the above to the goals pertaining to competence in the course(s) in question

Pedagogical approach

The studies in cultural management are based on project learning, which means that starting from the first year, all studies are integrated with the world of work as far as possible. Individual courses are integrated into larger productions or projects. The lecturer'r role is to be a mentor-counsellor, who contributes to the student's career planning throughout the studies.

Multiple study methods are used to support students' professional development, general work life skills and professional competence. The studies involve work in small groups, expert lectures, industrial visits, learning assignments, project work and practical training in real-life work settings.

Profile of the programme

After completion of your studies, you will be competent to work as a cultural management developer and expert or as an entrepreneur. You will possess extensive knowledge of the cultural field and various processes in cultural management (media/event management).As a Bachelor of Culture and Arts, you will plan and implement a variety of cultural and innovation projects. Your education will prepare you for responsible planning of cultural events and services, including realistic resourcing. On graduation you will be competent to organise and manage cultural projects and digital media productions.

Occupational profiles

Cultural management competence is required in ideation, planning, implementation, technical production, marketing, evaluation, management and commercialisation of cultural services and productions. As a Bachelor of Culture and Arts you can work in culture industry, product development or assume responsibility for organizational tasks in companies, municipalities or organizations. You may work as an event manager (e.g. for festivals), as a production manager, in various positions in digital media production, as an education or entertainment manager, as cultural or community worker/advisor or as a project or regional secretary. You may also become employed in a production company, in a public media company or work as a project manager on commission.

Internationalization

Students are encouraged to obtain international experience. A study module of approximately 30 credits, mainly targeted at incoming exchange students, will be offered during one semester; second or third-year students within the degree programme are also eligible to participate. Moreover, students can undertake part of their studies in another country. They can spend all or part of the practical training periods abroad. Students will study and have exams on literature written in a foreign language during several courses.

Structure of the studies

The studies consist of the following modules:

At the beginning of your studies you will concentrate on basic studies. These involve project management, entrepreneurship and economic and marketing studies. Projects and commissions, carried out in collaboration with the world of work, are the golden thread of your studies starting right from the first year. Projects enable students to engage in multidisciplinary collaboration and networking. Professional studies, focused and tailored practical training and career counselling ensure that students reach in-depth professional competence. These studies are partly common to all students, partly elective.

Students, who choose event management as their elective professional studies focus on planning events according to client needs, on developing the work with target audiences and on managing event settings. Other important contents involve selling and marketing productions and management of partnerships.

Students, who choose media management as their elective professional studies focus on content planning, production techology and post-production. Extesive use of distribution channels and selling and marketing of productions form a foundation for the dissemination of productions.

Students, who choose visual management as their elective professional studies focus on user-oriented planning, on special features of graphic design and on product, campaign and corporate identity design. Bringing innovations into commercial production, as well as planing, selling and marketing of ancillary products are also salient contents.

The degree programme includes guided practical training (60 cr) in real-life work settings. The programme also includes free-choice studies (10 cr) and a final thesis (15 cr). The degree programme has excellent international networks, which enables students to undertake studies and practical training experiences abroad.

After their first year of study, students can choose to participate in the one-semester FramiPro studies (30 cr).
