Learning Outcomes
WORKING COMMUNITY COMPETENCE
Students get acquainted with the basics of the Finnish language and learn to use both the spoken and the written language. Furthermore, students get acquainted with Finland as a country and Finns' habits and expressions of politeness. The target level of the course is A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. After the course, students know the basics of the Finnish pronunciation. Students know how to greet and react to greetings and are able to tell about themselves. They are able to ask for a price and make orders in Cafés. Students can recognize some basic vocabulary of nursing. They are able to ask simple questions and answer questions related to familiar subjects. Students can recognize familiar words and the most common phrases spoken very slowly and clearly and understand familiar names and words in very simple sentences. Students can cope with conversations related to themselves if they get some help from their conversation partners. Students are able to write messages and fill out forms asking some personal information and are familiar with the Finnish culture and way of life.

Contents
Pronunciation. The alphabet, numbers, week days, months, time, countries, languages, nationalities. Greetings. Introducing and telling about oneself. Food vocabulary. Shopping. Asking and answering questions. Grammar: e.g. principles of the verb conjugation, questions, negative forms, present tense, personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, possessive case, partitive case. Finnish culture and way of life.
