Learning Outcomes

The aim of the Multicultural Libraries Module is to help students understand different cultures and the impact people with an immigrant background have on library work. Understanding the meaning of cultural diversity in library work and the ability to develop public libraries to answer to this challenge is important in librarian work. This module, which consists five different courses, will answer these questions.

Essential issues discussed are e.g. how immigrants use libraries and the types of special services they need, experiences and cases in Finland and abroad; different manners, different needs, different cultures - impact on library work; special needs pertaining to collections from the multicultural point of view
The course includes project in a library pertaining to multicultural library work.

Assessment Methods

Students will engage in problem-based learning. E-learning is one of the methods used during the course. Grading is based on a scale of 1 to 5. Students will be graded on their abilities to solve given problems (project) and to understand the processes and possibilities associated with multicultural library work.
