Learning Outcomes

COMPETENCE IN CUSTOMERSHIP IN HEALTH CARE, DECISION-MAKING COMPETENCE AND ETHICAL COMPETENCE

Students will, under supervision, be able to identify the needs of adult patients and their families and plan, implement, evaluate and document nursing care. They will, under supervision, be able to give oral reports. They will learn to deal with patients in various life situations. They are able to understand the principles of patient-oriented, resource-based and multi-professional nursing of patients and their families. Students will demonstrate their understanding of principles and guidelines on ethics and data protection.

CLINICAL COMPETENCE

Students will be learn to identify and evaluate changes and disorders in patients' vital functions and will, under supervision, be able to initiate appropriate nursing interventions. Under supervision, students will recognize individual rehabilitation needs of medical-surgical patients and seek to support the patient during the rehabilitation process. Under supervision, they will be competent in preparing patients for various procedures and in monitoring and caring for them during and after the treatment. Students know how to work aseptically to prevent infections. Under supervision, they are able to prepare patients for the more common types of examinations and measurements. Under supervision, students are able to plan and safely implement adult patients' intravenous fluid care and medication and blood transfusion and are able to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments. Under supervision, students will be able to implement nutritional therapy. They will be familiar with the more common diseases of medical-surgical patients, and with the methods for diagnosing and treating the diseases in the general practice level. Students are able to recognize the pain of the medical-surgical adult patient and will, under supervision, be able to plan and implement pain control and to evaluate its effectiveness.

COMPETENCE IN HEALTH PROMOTION

Students are able to work according to the principles of promoting and supporting the health and resources of the adult patients. Students know the main factors that influence the health and illness of the adult people.

COUNSELLING AND MENTORING COMPETENCE

Students will, under supervision, be able to counsel adult patients on the basis of research and evidence in issues pertaining to their health and illness. Under supervision, students are able to plan, implement and evaluate counselling situations.

LEARNING COMPETENCE

Students will be competent in critically evaluating their level of professional expertise with regard to their strengths and weaknesses. Students are able to evaluate their learning skills, needs and the learning environment.

Contents

Medical-surgical nursing and counselling of patients, who suffer from prevalent diseases. Written, electronic and oral documentation. Drug care.Peripheral cannulation, intravenous fluid and drug care, blood transfusions.

Assessment Methods

Active participation, written test, drug calculation test (must be passed before the practical training period of the medical surgical nursing)and lab skills exercises (regular attendance and active participation)
