Learning Outcomes

Students are able to recognize those risks for nature and for our environment which arise in their future working life as an engineer. They can recognize also complicated connections of pollution and other adverse effects for nature as climate change and decrease of biodiversity. Students are able to search, and to apply methods that may help to prevent these adverse effects, and if these effects appear the students know methods for remediation. StudentsÂ’ attitude towards nature conservation and responsible care has grown.

Contents

Air quality and climate, inland surface waterways and the Baltic Sea area, soil and groundwaters, impact of humans on the environment, preventing adverse effects, remediation of contaminated soil, applying directive on chemicals, sustainable development, energy-saving technology, act on waste, sorting, processing, recycling waste and disposal, environmental management systems, permits and administration

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Independent studies in Moodle learning environment. Assignment group works on special topics and finally some contact hours containing presentations created by student groups.

Assessment Criteria

Satisfactory (1...2): The student knows and understands to a basic concepts and methods of sustainable development, and is able to apply them to usual problems.

Good (3...4): The student is familiar with the concepts and methods of sustainable development, and is able to apply them to different types of problems. The student is able to combine the accumulated knowledge and skills with previous experiences in the subject.

Excellent (5): The student is familiar with the concepts and methods of sustainable development, and is able to apply them to a variety of different problems. The student has demonstrated creativity and innovation, and is able to find new meanings when applying what they have learned.

Assessment Methods

A final exam and assessment of the assignment group works and the presentation
