Learning Outcomes

Students will be introduced to the learning environment at the UAS, including the Internet environment. They will become familiar with the course aims and assessment criteria within their degree programme. Students will become aware of their study skills and learn to develop them further. They will be oriented to their future profession. They will also discover the international aspect of studies and employment options. Students will learn to evaluate their responsibilities as learners and future conributors to work communities. They will be introduced to the pedagogical approach of their degree programme and follow common rules as members of the student group. Students will know how to use the PC as a tool and they will be competent in basic information technology, text processing and office software. Upon completion of the course, students will know how to present Seinäjoki UAS library and information services and to name important producers and sources of information in their field. They will learn to analyse their needs for information and approach these needs from various perspectives. Students will learn to name and hierarchically analyse concepts related to a given topic. They will learn to select appropriate sources of information, use databases as well as evaluate and develop their information seeking skills. Students will learn to keep up-to-date with new professional and research knowledge and other field-related information. They will learn to interpret databases and Websites and observe Seinäjoki UAS instructions for written assignments.

Contents

During the course students will be introduced to the UAS as a learning environment, including support services; study counselling, student welfare services, goverment study grant, Student Union SAMO etc. Students will be informed of study practices and international study opportunities. Basic use of office software.
During information seeking sessions, the topics involve library and information services at Seinäjoki UAS; producers of information in the field of cultural management; use of databases; Internet and Web search engines; evaluation, use and application of information.

Seinäjoki UAS Curriculum, Degree Regulations, Student's Guide, SeUAS and library Websites, other material selected by the lecturer.

Assessment Criteria

Study skills (1 cr) criteria for pass:
Students are familiar with their learning environment and are active learners in the group and Internet environment. Students are aware of their study skills and know how to develop these skills. Students have knowledge of professional orientation options. Active participation and completion of assignments.
Information seeking (1 cr) will be assessed on a scale 1-5.
