Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will have adopted basic understanding of management and leadership for social field organizations. They will be able to name development targets for the work community and develop their own work in a goal-oriented manner. Students will recognize links between management and occupational welfare and they will learn to develop practices that promote collaboration.

Total work load of the study course 104 h (lectures, group work, reflection based on literature).

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Major part of the first and second year study courses. The practical training periods "Social services producing social security" and "Psychosocial social work methods".

- Personnel administration and rules in the world of work
- Communication and interaction
- Mentoring and initiating new employees
- Development of work community, work supervision, appraisal discussions

- Development of one's work and self-management

Recommended or Required Reading

The lecturer will inform students of the use of literature and material at the beginning of the course. Students will select literature based on the course topic and personal objectives. Sources must include material both in Finnish and in a foreign language.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lectures, exercises, individual and group assignments, online teaching, reflection based on literature, collaborative learning, visiting expert lecturers. Theoretical studies alternate with practice.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 1-2:
Students are familiar with the basics of management, leadership and personnel administration in social field organizations. Students are aware of their personal development needs in work life.
Grade 3-4:
Students know how to apply theories, essential concepts, methods and principles pertaining to management and leadership in the social field. They are aware of their values, attitudes and responsibility in managerial duties.
Grade 5:
Students are able to evaluate and analyse factors and phenomena pertaining to occupational welfare and demonstrate ability to plan collaborative practices. Students know how to apply theories on management and leadership and how to develop the work community and their own work in a goal-oriented manner. Students are aware of how their values and attitudes affect their actions.

Assessment Methods

Based on course objectives and personal interests, students compile a summary of their learning and write two reflective essays based on literature:management and leadership; communication and interaction. Active participation is required throughout the course.
