Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with the legislation pertaining to drug care, with various types of drugs and how they are administered, and the effects of drugs in the body. Students will be competent in reading prescriptions and know how drugs are ordered, stored, distributed and destroyed. They will be able to administer solid and liquid drugs and give insulin injections. They will also be familiar with the drug care of the more common diseases in Finland.
Student's Workload
Classroom activities 32 hours + 8 hours (a pharmacist's contribution). 32 hours of independent study.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods
Lectures, individual and pair work, small-scale exercises (administration of drugs, calculations, reading prescriptions, familiarization with the Pharmaca Fennica), independent study.
Assessment Criteria
Grading will be announced during the course.
Assessment Methods
Scale: passed/fail. Students are required to have at least 50 % of the answers on the theoretical part of the exam correct, and the drug calculations must all be correct in order to pass the exam. Passing the course requires that students pass their exam and attend 100 % of the lessons.
Further Information
According to the National Guide on Safe Pharmacology (STM 2005:32: Turvallinen lääkehoito), professionals with social field qualifications are entitled to administer medicines via natural route and to dispense medicines into dispensers the clients' homes. After obtaining additional training and written permission and after they have been found competent, they are also allowed to give s.c. injections. The written permission must be signed by a qualified physician, who will be responsible for defining the necessary level of competence and needs for further training. Students must present a transcript of their pharmacology studies.
