Learning Outcomes
The student knows about the phases involved in the development of data processing and the significance of it in education and in society.
Upon completion of the course, student will know the basic functions of the computers and the distinctive features of the operating system in use. The student can use common computing tools.
The students will understand the issues associated with data protection, be competent in identifying risks and finding solutions of problems in data protection.
The student understands how libraries data processing systems work and be competent to work in purchasing and development projects.
Student's Workload
Total work load of the course are 320 h, of which autonomous studies are 130 h and scheduled studies are 190 h.

No previous studies are required.
Contents
• The basics of data processing, the operating systems and utility programs.
• The basic issues concerning data communications; data communications networks (data networks, communication networks, wireless data transfer), local networks and the network services (Internet).
• The data processing systems in libraries; data processing systems used in libraries in Finland and review of IT standards and processes involved in developing and purchasing data processing systems.
• Concepts and sub-areas associated with data protection; data protection for companies and public-sector services, data protection solutions for organisations.
• Concepts associated with data management, designing and modelling databases; features and functions of database programmes; creating a database using an existing database programme, managing databases and publishing a database on the Internet.
