Learning Outcomes
CLINICAL COMPETENCE
Students will be introduced to various areas in clinical laboratory medicine and to the laboratory process. They will learn to describe the role of laboratory tests in examining bodily functions and disorders. They will become familiar with the more common examinations in clinical physiology, microbiology, chemistry and haematology and learn to interpret the results. They will learn to prepare patients for common laboratory examinations and to take blood, urine and stool samples. They will also learn the basics of point-of-care testing.

Contents
Areas in clinical laboratory medicine. Laboratory process, reference range and optimal health range. Patient counselling and sample taking. Clinical-physiological examinations of the cardiovascular system. Clinical microbiology samples. Common examinations in clinical chemistry and haematology.

- are able explain the use of the laboratory tests as part of the nursing process
- apply the most appropriate method of interpretating the test results
- understand the importance of quality assurance in laboratory diagnostics and are able to implement it in point - of - care testing
- understand the importance of laboratory test standardization
- know how to counsel patients preparing for laboratory tests
- know how to take a venous blood sample using the open- and vacuum technique, attending to high quality sampling principles
- know how to counsel patients on giving urine
samples and how to conduct chemical screening, attending to quality criteria
- know how to obtain samples by skin puncture and how to determine haemoglobin using point - of - care equipment
- are able to interpret results of the most important clinical-physiological examinations on respiratory and cardiovascular organs and theoretically know how to carry out these examinations
- know how to fill out a microbiological test referral form and understand the importance of the information
- understand the importance of asepsis and self protection and are able to choose a correct sample container and method
- know how counsel patients on taking, storing and transporting samples from home according to quality criteria
- are familiar with common clinical-chemical and haematological tests, know their purposes and the meaning of abnormal results
