Learning Outcomes

Students will
learn to name disorders, injuries and diseases of adult client's body systems; learn essential facts about physiotherapy for patients with hip or knee replament and learn to teach pre and post-operative exercises to these patients; learn to examine patients with musculo-skeletal problems, to define common functional disorders and to assess health-promoting or health-damaging factors pertaining to the adult clients' life situation, physical activity or functional capacity; learn to guide and counsel clients on the promotion of their musculoskeletal health; appropriately use physiotherapy examination methods to assess work ability and functional capacity and apply this knowledge in clinical reasoning, diagnosing and in planning and evaluating the effects of therapy; apply the principles of therapeutic exercise in their work with patients/clients; study the mechnisms of pain and the physiological effects of pain and learn various methods to measure pain; use various main management methods in their work with patients; learn various forms of physical therapy and their application areas and know how to use them safely as part of physiotherapy; learn to assess clients'/patients' need for assistive equipment and to advise them on the use of the equipment to support their functional capacity; learn to supervise special needs groups' physical exercise; use evidence-based knowledge when they study adult physiotherapy; understand the main principles of research methods.

Contents

Musculoskeletal disorders and physiotherapy; pre and post-operative physiotherapy for orthopaedic patients; health promotion with special reference to various groups of diseases; pain and pain management in physiotherapy; physical therapy; assistive equipment for daily activities and mobility; applied physical activities for groups with special needs; research methods

Assessment Criteria

Excellent:
Students apply knowledge learnt earlier on the structure, function and dysfunction of the musculo-skeletal system to analyse and assess clients' mobility and function and to plan and implement various high quality individual and/or group physiotherapy sessions.
Students know how to safely use physical therapy methods in physiotherapy practice and how to justify their action on the basis of scientific research or practical knowledge.
Students know how to assess clients'/patients' need for assistive aids for daily mobility and are able to counsel them independently on the use of these aids.
Students justitify their choices on the basis of national and international recommendations.

Good:

Students are partly able to apply knowledge learnt earlier on the structure, function and dysfunction of the musculo-skeletal system, but they need assistance with analysing and assessing clients' mobility and function and in planning and implementing individual and/or group physiotherapy sessions.
Students need guidance when they use physical therapy methods in physiotherapy practice.
Students know how to assess clients'/patients' need for assistive aids for daily mobility but they need support to be able to counsel them on the use of these aids.
Students justitify their physiotherapy choices to a limited degree; they know national and international recommendations but do not make use of them in practice.
