Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to recognise development challenges in gerontological care and nursing and demonstrate ethical competence. In multi-professional collaboration, they will learn to promote and maintain older people's health, resources and ability to function. Students will learn to observe and assess older people's basic nees in various situations and settings. As members of multi-professional teams, students will know how to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care, pharmacological care and rehabilitation for common geriatric illnesses and how to counsel and advise older people and their families.

Student's Workload

182 hours, including 70 hours in the classroom/seminars etc and 112 hours of independent study.

Contents

The practice of gerontologicial care and nursing; observing and assessing older people's functional capacity, resorces and basic needs; care and nursing designed to promote and maintain functional capacity; treatment and safe drug care for common geriatric illnesses; knowledge foundation for gerontological care and nursing; ethically sound decision-making.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5
Students know how to holistically assess basic needs of healthy and sick older people and how to plan, implement and evaluate care, nursing and rehabilitation to support their clients' resources. Students have command over the nursing care process and drug care pertaining to common geriatric illnesses and they can justify the rehabilitation practices in these illnesses. Students develop the counselling of both clients and their families. They propose development challenges to improve gerontological care and nursing. They demonstrate sound ethical competence.

Grade 3
Students know how to assess basic needs of healthy and sick older people and how to plan and implement gerontological care, nursing and rehabilitation. As members of multi-professional teams, students are able to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care, drug care and rehabilitation for common geriatric illnesses and to counsel and advice clients and their families. Students recognise development challenges in gerontological care and nursing. They demonstrate ethical competence.

Grade 1
Students know how to assess basic needs and resources of healthy and sick older people and, under supervision, how to plan and implement gerontological care, nursing and rehabilitation to support clients' resources. Students are able to implement nursing care, drug care and rehabilitation for common geriatric illnesses and to counsel and advice clients and their families, but they need supervision.

Assessment Methods

active participation in lectures, obligatory participation in laboratory studies, exam, care and rehabilitation plan for the practical training period.

Further Information

The course starts in the 1st year (asepsis, basic care) and continues in the 2nd.
