Education leading to a bachelor's degree

Full-time studies

Students studying at the University of Applied Sciences earn a Bachelor's Degree upon completion of their studies. The extent of the studies is either 210 or 240 ECTS credits, and their duration varies between 3.5 and 4 years, depending on the programme. The studies offered as daytime courses are mainly implemented on weekdays. The completion of the studies requires full-time studying.

The key objectives of the studies include professional development and growth into expertise. The competences required by working life form the basis of the curricula. Theoretical studies are supported by a strong connection with working life, for example in practical training, development tasks, projects and thesis work.

In addition to knowledge and skills related to one's professional field, a graduate from the University of Applied Sciences needs skills in planning and evaluation, decision-making, creativity, as well as social skills. These qualities can be trained in different learning situations typical of university studies: during lectures and exercises, team assignments and through contacts with working life. Students learn through a variety of methods and in various learning environments, e.g. in a classroom setting, through independent study, or in virtual learning environments. Students also have an opportunity to study or do their practical training abroad or complete part of their studies in a multidisciplinary group, working for real working-life commissions in projects.

Students learn through a variety of methods and in various surroundings led by a teacher, through independent study or in virtual learning environments. Students also have an opportunity to study or do their practical training abroad.

Multimodal implementation

Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences also offers Bachelor's Degree programmes implemented as multimodal implementations, aimed mainly at adult students. These studies are mainly provided in the evening and at weekends. The educational supply is based on working life needs and educational demand, for which the courses offered vary annually. The curricula of adult education are based on the study structures of full-time students. The degree programmes include 210 or 240 ECTS credits, depending on the programme. Students have the right to apply for the approval (recognition) of prior learning, if the acquired knowledge is equivalent to the learning objectives of the degree programme. The supervisors in the degree programmes provide guidance for compiling the plan and advise students on issues pertaining to the RPL process.

Education leading to a master's degree

A Master's Degree earned at a university of applied sciences is a higher education degree the aim of which is to combine studies and the development of working life. The studies, which are practical and geared toward the needs of working life, deepen the students' professional knowledge and expertise. The degree provides students with the knowledge and skills they need for working in demanding development and management duties requiring expert knowledge of their field and offers them new opportunities for career development. The qualifications acquired during studies are equivalent to a Master's Degree completed at a university of sciences.

The Master's Degree studies are intended for people who have a Bachelor's Degree from a university of applied sciences or a similar higher-education degree as well as at least a three-year work experience in the field. The extent of the degree is either 60 or 90 ECTS credits, depending on the field and the degree-specific goals are defined in more detail in the curricula.

Specialisation studies

Specialisation studies provided by universities of applied sciences are study modules of at least 30 credits promoting professional development and specialisation, which are aimed at those with a Bachelor-level degree and working life experience.

The goal of specialisation studies is that, based on their educational background and work experience, the student will be able to work in demanding expert duties and reach the deep special knowledge required by their expertise or command of a multidisciplinary ensemble. Another goal is that the student will be able to assess and improve the professional practices of their field based on the methods of scientific and artistic activities and be able to act in communities and networks as an expert of their own special field. The annual supply of specialisation studies is decided on by the Board of the University of Applied Sciences.

Open University of Applied Sciences

As the name suggests, the studies offered at Open University of Applied Sciences are open to everyone, and they mainly consist of courses and more extensive study modules, included in the degree programmes and the curriculum. Open UAS students most commonly study together with degree students exploiting study places reserved for them. In degree studies, studies completed at Open UAS may be credited on the same basis as other studies. Students completing more extensive studies (path studies) compile a Personal Curriculum. With certain conditions, based on completed studies of Open UAS, it is possible to apply as a student in a degree programme through a separate admission.
