Study Guide 2016 - 2017

President's Greeting

Welcome to Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences!

Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (SeAMK) has been operating for 20 years, and the academic year 2016–2017 is its 21st one as a permanent university of applied sciences. According to Strategy revised in 2014, the vision of SeAMK is to be an international and entrepreneur-spirited institution of higher education – the best one for our students. High-quality education is our guiding principle and the clearly defined goal of our operations.

At present, SeAMK operates on three campuses. The gradual shift from eight educational facilities to three campuses has made SeAMK even more communal. In 2018, the campus structure of SeAMK will become more concentrated, with only two campuses – the main campus of Frami and the campus of Ilmajoki – as the new building of the School of Health Care and Social Work has been erected in the Frami area.

We aim to operate as an independent and successful institution of higher education also in future. Our goal is to have wide national and international co-operation networks with working life and other universities.

All the fields of study central to working life, commerce and industry are represented at our University of Applied Sciences: technology, business, culture, social work and health care, natural resources and tourism, as well as catering and domestic services. Since August 2013, these fields of study have been offered by four Faculties: School of Food and Agriculture, School of Business and Culture, School of Health Care and Social Work and School of Technology.

The School of Business and Culture and the School of Technology are located on the Frami main campus in Seinäjoki. The School of Health Care and Social Work operates still at the moment at two different addresses: at Keskuskatu 32, close to the Seinäjoki main campus, and at Koskenalantie. The School of Food and Agriculture is also located in two places, on the Seinäjoki main campus and in the municipality of Ilmajoki. This school combines teaching and competence in Hospitality Management, Agriculture, Food Processing, and Biotechnology.

Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences provides education to approximately 4,800 degree students. Of them, 75 per cent are full-time students in 18 Bachelor-degree programmes for young people, of which two are instructed in English. At Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, there are seven Master-level degree programmes, related to five educational fields. In Business, the Master’s degree can also be earned in English.

In addition to these programmes, there are multimodal courses aimed especially at people in working life. While working, it is possible to earn Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as to take further education courses. Bachelor-level multimodal implementations are also available in the six localities where the Regional University of Applied Sciences operates.

Every year, about 1,000 new students are enrolled in our degree programmes, while about 800 students graduate. Our most important development task is to develop our learning and teaching methods in such a way that that our instruction is supported by up-to-date know-how from working life and industry. One example of this is FramiPro, a multidisciplinary learning environment based on project learning, in which students of different fields complete part of their degrees together, learning in projects. In addition to our traditional cooperation with companies, this has increased SeAMK’s cooperation with small and micro entrepreneurs.

The implementation of a digital campus in accordance with our revised Strategy is aimed at building an up-to-date learning environment and bringing our interest groups close to our operations. We aim at providing our students with knowledge and skills needed in an increasingly international operational environment. Therefore, we focus on international student and staff mobility. There are a wide range of opportunities for studying and conducting practical training abroad, especially in Europe, but also in all the other continents of the world.
