Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

Seinäjoki UAS's common practices are observed in the assessment and recognition of prior learning (RPL). The final thesis and Maturity Test are not included in the RPL process. Other studies can either be replaced by courses of equivalent content or other acquired expertise. Studies completed in other institutions may also be included in the optional and elective studies.

To receive credit for the practical training for prior work experience a report must be submitted to the degree programme according to the practices observed. Previously acquired expertise expires in 10 years. The teacher who processes the applications may request additional information or demonstration of prior learning, if necessary. • Job references and additional information acquired from employers

Pedagogical approach

Teaching in the Degree Programme in Cultural Management involves project-based learning whereby it prepares students for the working world as early as the first year of study. Individual courses are integrated into larger productions. The teacher functions as the students' mentor helping them throughout their entire academic career to achieve the goals they have set for their professional career.

A variety of teaching methods are used in the programme to support students' professional development, readiness for the working world and professional expertise. Students work in small groups, listen to lectures by experts, visit companies in the field, do assignments, work in projects and obtain practical experience in real work environments.

Profile of the programme

Courses in the programme are primarily held in Frami (in Seinäjoki Technology Centre). However, the local centre for rhythm music, Rytmikorjaamo, is also used as a learning environment where the Degree Programme in Cultural Management has its own teaching facilities. The SUAS (SeAMK) web TV is also used as a learning environment in addition to the other teaching facilities.

Students have the opportunity to do their compulsory practical training with SUAS TV productions.

Cultural Managers can work as event managers, e.g. in festivals, production managers, in different sectors of digital media management, project managers, counsellors in various fields of culture. As producers, students can work in production companies, as entrepreneurs, in the public service media and as production managers of contract productions.

Students will be familiar with various channels of digital and social media. Upon completion of the studies, students will be familiar with the possibilities and limitations of different elements of media. They will possess the knowledge and skills needed to create commercially profitable productions.

Occupational profiles

Students graduating from the programme work in public, private or in the third sector. The core skills are project management, social skills, and understanding the profit-generation concept. The programme provides students with a general overview of the fields of culture and media and the professional know-how needed to work in demanding job positions that call for expert knowledge, e.g. large cultural events or film production.

Internationalization in the Degree Programme

The Degree Programme in Cultural Management emphasizes internationality. There is an international study module (30 credits) which is held in spring semester. This module is mainly meant for mobility students, but the second and third year’s students of the degree programme can also participate.
